Somewhere...

I was out running errands the yesterday. We’ve had the first signs of the end of the year coming and truthfully, the colder months and shorter days are not my favorite time of the year.

I can feel the promise of winter’s chill in my bones and I absolutely despise it.

Yesterday had been a strange kind of day, the sun peeked out behind the clouds and gave the false hint of warming things up. It was one of those fall days where it had been mostly overcast with that telltale Autumn chill. Just a cold, gray day for the better part of Thursday.

It never rained but it looked much of the time as if the skies would open up any second. Certainly, it was the kind of day where if you have your choice, camping out underneath a blanket with an old movie and some a hearty bowl of soup or a warming cup of hot chocolate would be one’s preference.

Still, I got out there and as the afternoon drew to a close the sky did clear up just long enough for the sun to wave goodbye as it dropped below the horizon. The dark clouds made their way eastward still pregnant with all the moisture and I looked up wondering if they would make a last ditch attempt to wet everything and everyone down.

And there it was!



You don’t see them often, especially not in the fall but a wonderful and well-defined rainbow blazed across the sky.

It was just beautiful.

So much so, I stopped and just stood there looking at it. I’ve seen rainbows before so that’s nothing new but, they don’t show up often. I thought I should take a few moments if only to appreciate the fleeting beauty of the rainbow while I could.

I was in the parking lot of a local supermarket and a few other people noted the phenomenon and could be seen pointing skyward to their companions. I snapped off a few shots with the cellphone camera and watched as slowly but surely the light dissipated.

The thought struck me how there was a good lesson here. There is beauty in the world around us all the time but we miss it. All it takes to see it though is just taking a single moment to look up – in essence moving away from being so engrossed in the trivialities of our day.
